Established in 1994 as a co-educational institution, Swami Vivekanand Govt. College Ghumarwin, Distt. Bilaspur H.P. started functioning in the premises of Govt. Primary School Kalari. When the ACC Cement factory Barmana started the construction work of the majestic building, the college was shifted to a rented building at Ghumarwin. In 1999, the ACC Cement factory Barmana handed over the building to the state Government and the college was provided its own infrastructure at Kalari at a distance of three k.m. west north of Ghumarwin town. At present its campus is spread over 14.04 acres of land. In 1994, when the college was established, only arts faculty was started. In 1998 Science and Commerce faculties were also introduced. The institution was recognized by UGC under sections of 2(f) in 1999 and 12 (B) in 2008. In the session 2009-2010 two new vocational courses BCA and PGDCA were introduced under self financing scheme. In the academic session 2012-2013 M.A. English was started and in the same session under self financing scheme BBA, another vocational course, was also started. At present the college caters to the academic requirements of more than 2000 students of the rural areas of Ghumarwin sub division of Distt. Bilaspur. At present as many as 45 teachers are providing their services.

Swami Vivekanand Govt. College Ghumarwin is proving to be a key factor for the economic and social transformation of the region. The college aims to give all round formation to its students making them academically excellent and socially committed and to give stress on all round development of their personality. The college believes in promoting academic/professional knowledge/skill both in creation and dissemination by producing graduates and post graduates well equipped with knowledge and skill and continuously improving learning environment while maintaining high ethical and multicultural standards.

As Swami Vivekanand has said that education is ‘the manifestation of the perfection already in man’. So our mission is to help the students to manifest their knowledge and to remove the obstacles that come in their way so that they may achieve their full human potential, may gain academic excellence, all round development of their personality and contribute to the great good of the community and the nation. In order to accomplish this end the college endeavors to help its students to become conscious of purpose which may give meaning and value to their lives so that they may be able to have positive and fulfilling roles in nation-building. The college endeavors to enrich and empower its learners through value-based quality education. Stress is given on harmonising the traditional values with the new values brought through the progress of science and technology. Besides, the classroom teaching which is coupled with the possible applications and uses of academic knowledge vis-a-vis the issue of social and personal importance, students are also motivated to participate in different co-curricular activities including.
